From the sheltered Blue Flag bay on your doorstep to a Condé Nast-ranked cove, a beach with 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints, and a hidden snorkelling gem inside a Natural Park — ten beaches within 30 minutes of Praia da Luz, with everything you need to know before you go.
Praia da Luz sits just west of Lagos in a particularly well-positioned corner of the Algarve — close enough to some of the coast’s most spectacular scenery to make day-tripping effortless, yet calm and unhurried enough to come home to. The beach on your doorstep is excellent on its own terms. But within 30 minutes in any direction, the western Algarve serves up ten beaches that between them cover every mood a holiday might call for.
Whether you are after a calm sheltered bay for children, a dramatic photogenic cove for a slow afternoon, a long Atlantic sweep for watersports, or a genuinely hidden gem that still feels undiscovered — it is all here. Below, each beach comes with everything you need to plan a visit.
Praia da Luz — Your Home Beach
Start with the beach on your doorstep. Praia da Luz is a gently shelving, crescent-shaped bay of soft golden sand roughly 500m long, sheltered on the east by the striking Rocha Negra — a dramatic basalt headland formed by volcanic lava around 150 million years ago. The western end, tucked below the cliffs, is quieter and rewards a wander with natural tidal rock pools and an almost private feeling, even in high summer.
The water holds Blue Flag status every year for its consistently excellent quality. It is shallow and calm in the sheltered centre of the bay — ideal for children and nervous swimmers — while the outer stretch gives enough Atlantic movement for body-surfing and paddleboarding. Two watersport operators work directly from the beach in season, and the seafront promenade is lined with restaurants and cafés steps from the sand.
| Beach type | Sandy, gently shelving crescent bay |
| Best for | Families, all ages, watersports, sunset walks |
| Distance | 0 km — 2-minute walk from Villa Waterside |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (May–Oct), showers, toilets, lounger hire, disabled access |
| Parking | Paid lot ~300m from beach; free street parking further out |
| Restaurants | Several on the promenade — A Concha and Boaty’s are the standouts |
Praia de Porto de Mós — Dramatic Cliffs & Open Atlantic
Porto de Mós is a long, open beach backed by towering golden cliffs — one of the most dramatic natural settings on this stretch of coast. It faces the full Atlantic rather than sitting behind a sheltered headland, which means there is genuine surf when conditions are right and a satisfying sense of wide-open space that the cove beaches further east cannot match. Lifeguards are on duty from Easter through to the end of summer.
This beach is also the eastern end of one of the western Algarve’s great coastal walks: the 11km cliff path to Praia da Luz, passing through extraordinary headland scenery with Atlantic views throughout. It can be walked in either direction in around four hours at a relaxed pace.
| Beach type | Sandy, open, Atlantic-facing |
| Best for | Surfers, walkers, those wanting more space |
| Distance | ~5 km east of Praia da Luz · 10 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (Easter–end of summer), two beach bars |
| Parking | Paid parking nearby |
| Note | More exposed to wind and swell than sheltered coves — check conditions |
Praia do Camilo — The Most Scenic Cove Near Lagos
Praia do Camilo is framed by the Algarve’s most extraordinary limestone rock formations — orange, yellow, and red cliffs rising on every side above a pocket of crystalline green-blue water and amber sand. It is accessed via a long wooden staircase of around 200 steps, but the descent feels more like entering a cathedral than a beach. For many guests, this is the single most beautiful view in the entire Algarve.
The beach is deliberately small, which keeps it from ever feeling overwhelmed. At low tide, natural caves in the cliffs link to neighbouring coves — accessible on foot for those who want to explore. Arrive before 10am in July and August for the best experience; in May, June, September, and October it is considerably quieter and just as beautiful.
| Beach type | Sandy, sheltered cove between limestone formations |
| Best for | Couples, photography, snorkelling, memorable afternoons |
| Distance | ~8 km east of Praia da Luz · 15 min drive |
| Access | ~200 wooden steps — not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (in season), small beach bar, limited loungers |
| Parking | Small free car park at clifftop — fills quickly in summer |
Praia Dona Ana — Ranked Among the World’s Best Beaches
Praia Dona Ana has been ranked among the 50 best beaches in the world by Condé Nast Traveller — and seeing it in person, that is entirely easy to believe. Two main coves meet at a natural rock arch, the sea running from jade green in the shallows to deep cobalt further out, framed by sculptural golden limestone cliffs. It is a popular stop on sea kayak tours from Lagos marina, and at low tide the caves connecting the two coves are accessible on foot.
“Two coves meet at a natural rock arch. The sea runs from jade green to deep cobalt. It is one of those views that stops the conversation.”
| Beach type | Sandy, two coves with dramatic rock formations |
| Best for | Photography, couples, snorkelling, kayak excursions |
| Distance | ~10 km east of Praia da Luz · 15 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards, beach bar and café, loungers in summer |
| Parking | Paid car park at clifftop |

Praia da Batata — Gateway to Lagos Old Town
Praia da Batata lies just south of the historic Ponta da Bandeira fort and is the most convenient beach for pairing a swim with an afternoon in Lagos town. The sheltering cliffs keep the waves gentle and the bay calm — ideal for families and those who prefer relaxed swimming conditions. It is compact and characterful: not the grandest beach on this list, but its position makes it uniquely practical, and the combination of swimming, fort, and old town makes for a perfect half-day out.
| Beach type | Sandy, sheltered cove |
| Best for | Families, combining with a Lagos town visit |
| Distance | ~9 km east of Praia da Luz · 15 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards, showers, toilets, sunbed hire, seafront kiosks |
| Access | Easy — short walk from town centre, flat approach |
| Parking | Lagos town centre parking nearby |
Meia Praia — Four Kilometres of Open Sand
Everything changes when you cross the Lagos estuary to Meia Praia. The intimate coves give way to a four-kilometre sweep of open sand curving around the Bay of Lagos — the same bay from which Portugal’s great navigators set sail in the 15th century. Despite its scale, Meia Praia is rarely crowded: there are extensive dunes, multiple beach bars and restaurants along the strip, and several watersport centres for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding.
| Beach type | Long open sandy beach, ~4 km |
| Best for | Watersports, groups, those who want space |
| Distance | ~12 km east of Praia da Luz · 20 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards, multiple beach bars, loungers, watersport hire |
| Getting there | Ferry from Lagos waterfront is the easiest option in summer |
| Parking | Large free car park available |
Praia do Burgau — Whitewashed Village Above the Sand
A short drive west from Praia da Luz brings you to Burgau, a small fishing village where brilliant whitewashed houses cling to dark cliffs above a wide sandy beach. The beach is ideal for families — fine sand, sheltered calm water, and lifeguards in season — while the village itself remains small enough to feel genuinely authentic and unhurried. The coastal drive between Burgau and Salema, both directions, produces some of the most spectacular cliff scenery on the entire western Algarve.
| Beach type | Sandy, sheltered bay below fishing village |
| Best for | Families, village atmosphere, sunset views |
| Distance | ~8 km west of Praia da Luz · 12 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (in season), showers, toilets, loungers in summer |
| Parking | Very small free car park — fills quickly, arrive before 10am in summer |
| Restaurants | Miam Burgau (French/fish), A Barraca (beachfront grill) |
Praia de Salema — Family Beach with Dinosaur Footprints
Salema is a wide, sandy family beach inside a charming working fishing village — the kind of place where you plan a quick swim and end up having dinner on the sand as the sun goes down. The water is calm and clear, perfect for children. The atmosphere remains warmly local and entirely unhurried, with the fishing boats pulled up on the western end of the beach giving it a character that purely tourist beaches lack.
The surprising draw: genuine fossilised dinosaur footprints, around 130 million years old, are preserved in the rocks at the edge of the beach. Most visitors walk straight past them without knowing. Ask locally for the exact spot — they are best seen at low tide.
| Beach type | Wide sandy beach in working fishing village |
| Best for | Families, curious visitors, long relaxed lunches |
| Distance | ~13 km west of Praia da Luz · 15 min drive |
| Hidden gem | Dinosaur footprints in the rocks at the beach edge (ask locally) |
| Facilities | Lifeguards, showers, loungers from ~€14 |
| Restaurants | A Bóia and several other beachfront options |
Praia da Ingrina — Best-Kept Secret in the Western Algarve
Set in a protected natural cove near Raposeira, within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Praia da Ingrina genuinely earns the “hidden gem” description. The water is calm, crystal-clear, and notably warmer than more exposed Atlantic beaches — a combination that makes it outstanding for snorkelling over the underwater rock formations that extend from the shore. A unique natural limestone “pier” extends into the sea on the western side — a geological feature found nowhere else on the Algarve coast.
| Beach type | Sandy cove with rocky sections within the Natural Park |
| Best for | Snorkelling, diving, tranquillity, off-the-beaten-path visitors |
| Distance | ~25 km west of Praia da Luz · 30 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (summer), sunbeds and umbrellas for hire |
| Parking | Small free car park right at the beach |
| Restaurants | O Sebastião — highly recommended, cash only |
Praia do Martinhal — Watersports & Families Near Sagres
Praia do Martinhal is the ideal beach to stop at on the way to Sagres — 650 metres of golden sand in the sheltered Bay of Baleeira. Its protected position makes the water among the calmest on the entire western Algarve, which has earned it a strong reputation for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding alongside its more straightforward appeal as a relaxed family beach. Combine it with Cape St. Vincent — the southwesternmost point of continental Europe, 10 minutes further on — for one of the most memorable day trips in the Algarve.
| Beach type | Wide sandy bay, ~650m, sheltered |
| Best for | Watersports, families, day trips toward Sagres |
| Distance | ~30 km west of Praia da Luz · 30 min drive |
| Facilities | Lifeguards (in season), loungers, good parking |
| Restaurants | Several options in the Martinhal resort village |
| Pair with | Cape St. Vincent lighthouse, 10 min further west |
Practical advice for planning a beach day from Praia da Luz
A rental car makes all ten beaches accessible. Most are 10–30 minutes from Praia da Luz. The Route 4 bus connects Luz to Lagos roughly every 30 minutes — ideal for evenings when you plan to drink at dinner.
May–June and September–October give warm weather, calm seas, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season — Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo fill early and stay busy all day.
Praia da Luz, Praia de Salema, Meia Praia, and Praia do Martinhal are the best family picks — calm water, easy flat access, lifeguards on duty, and good facilities throughout.
Expect 18–21°C in summer along this Atlantic coast — cooler than the eastern Algarve but perfectly swimmable and very refreshing on hot days. The sea reaches its warmest in September.
The cliff path between Praia da Luz and Lagos (~11 km, ~4 hrs) is one of the Algarve’s great walks, passing Porto de Mós, Ponta da Piedade, Dona Ana, and Camilo. Start early and finish with lunch in Lagos.
For the best sunset light, head to Praia do Burgau, Praia de Salema, or the clifftops above Praia do Camilo — all face southwest and catch the full Atlantic evening glow.
